The birth and growth of the University of Ilorin was like any other institution. But the difference is that it choose to stand out among others and brought a great recognition and respect to itself. Located in kwara state, Ilorin to be precised, the university was established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in 1975 and it owned by the Federal Government. Recently in August 2014, It was ranked the best university in Nigeria.
The university began as a university college affiliated to the oldest university in Nigeria in 1975. It was then led by Dr T.N Yamuna, the then principal of the college. The university college started with three academics faculties, Arts, Science and Education. On Oct 1976, the first set of students, 200 in number were admitted into the residence following an entrance examination. Academic work started on the 25th Oct that same year.
The institution attained a full recognisable position in Oct 1977 with the appointment of the then principal, professor O.O Akinkugbe as the first vice-chancellor.
From the year 1983, The law programme was started as a department in the faculty of Business and Social science. In the year 1993, it was reestablished as a full fledged faculty. The university of Ilorin can now boast of Fifteen(15) faculties. Namely:
Environmental science
Life science
Management science
Physical science
Social science
Veterinary Medicine
Communication and Information science
Engineering and Technology
Pharmaceutical Science
It has a college of health science with two faculties ( Basic medical science and Clinical Science) and two institutes ( institute of Education and Unilorin Sugar research institute). It has a post graduate school. These have over 60 academics departments. Undergraduate degree programs run for 3-5 or 6 depending on entry qualification and discipline.
University of Ilorin has grown from strength to strength and now has a total of 3,040 staffs and 20, 084 students.
Will use the medium to congratulate the new chancellor, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji (Dr) Abdulmumin Kabir Usman; the pro- chancellor, His Royal Majesty, prof obi okonjo, the University chancellor, Prof Abdulganiy Ambali and the entire university community on the auspicious occasion of unilorin at 40.
Looking far back, There is indeed much to be celebrated. We are better by far.
